Thanks to Bradley
Walker, a community tester, we provide here the
list of supported OS.
"Here is my lists of compatible
and or incompatible operating systems that I tried
Host4Net on. I installed all of the linux/unix OS's
with default install options unless I made small
changes to turn on or off http/sql/ftp/dns features.
Other than that I installed the most current WebMin
which is version 1.150. Immediately afterwards I
installed UserMin and VirtualMin, installed/configured
Host4Net, and finally made a mysql database/table
to run the empty.sql script against. In some cases
if the OS did not have MySQL installed or other
server dameons I did install them as needed using
the latest versions of each. The information I used
for the Host4Net module config is as follows:
Database Name: host4net
Server Hostname: 192.168.1.10
Password: (set to) host4net
Use DBI: NO
DBI Port: Default
Use MySQL DBI Driver: NO
Once I accomplished that I would setup sample data
inside of Host4Net as if I was setting it up for
a customer and seeing how it worked, any bugs, ease
of use, etc. Below I have made notes with each operating
system and recorded my thoughts on the installation
time, ease of install, compatibility issues with
the OS, and whether or not I would use this myself
or recommend using it to a fellow webhoster. If
enough people request it...I'll make a spreadsheet
with all of the data and give it to Dan to put on
the website of verified OS's. Just let me know.
So without further waiting here are my results..."

BeOS Professional 5 (i386)
Well I have the OS... why not try it? :) I always
loved this OS and when I installed it I figured
I'd run into issues of probably not being able to
install webmin on it
at all. Of course I was right webmin didn't install.

ClarkConnect Home Edition 2.2 (i386)
Since ClarkConnect is virtually built right off
a modified RedHat 9, then it should in theory, and
did, work just fine. I had troubles with the database
because I was working on other stuff but outside
of my own mistake everything worked fine. My experience
with Clark Connect is that all previous versions
are based around the most current RedHat OS at the
time so if Host4Net works on previous redhat versions
then it should work without problem on the ClarkConnect
versions including the Office versions.
Likes:
A really great OS for modified routers, gateways,
and hosting machines. The OS will work on a system
as low as a Pentium 133 for a new Pentium 4 and
the OS
still flies. It's based off of RedHat so the RPM
package manager works flawlessly, webmin installed
quickly and Host4Net ran without issue. For a small
inhouse
business this is a definate combination to consider
Dislikes:
Not really anything to dislike about ClarkConnect.
It's free, it's based off of RedHat, and it just
works.

FreeBSD 5.2.1 Technology Release (i386)
Does FreeBSD ever change their installer? Anyway
that aside it installed as it always has... fast
and easy. I fired up gnome, opened a terminal and
quickly
installed Webmin and Host4Net (modifying the module
file first). Then it was off to build MySQL from
source which went without a single error. I opened
a browser
and within seconds was inside Host4Net successfully
using it and it's features. As like with all of
the installs a MySQL database with user permissions
must be
setup!

OpenBSD 3.3 (i386)
OpenBSD 3.4 is the latest but since they do not
make ISO's of their software the closest I could
find was the 3.3 version online. Installing OpenBSD
was fairly
easy considering it was very similiar to it's cousin
NetBSD. Also this time I knew was was ahead for
me and went directly to installing Perl, Webmin,
Host4Net,
and any other dependencies I would need. Amazingly
this time with little effort MySQL was installed
without too much trouble, although trying to get
MySQL to
run wasn't as easy. In the end I had the same problem
as with NetBSD, able to install WebMin and Host4Net,
but not MySQL to test Host4Net.
Likes:
- Host4Net did install so appearantly will work
on this OS once it's configured.
Dislikes:
- Same as NetBSD dislikes below.

OpenDarwin 6.6.2 (i386)

NetBSD 1.6.2 (i386)
When it comes to installing NetBSD, it is nearly
identical to OpenBSD. Both have nearly the same
commands and command sequences. The only thing different
is that OpenBSD uses a command line/text prompt
while NetBSD uses a text menu based system. Still
none the less they seem nearly identical. My best
guess is that if Host4Net works on NetBSD, then
it should work on OpenBSD no problem.
Installing NetBSD was an adventure in itself. It
took me several hours to get the 3Com NIC working
but finally all of the hardware worked allowing
me to install
XFree86 and get a very crude xterm window manager
up. Afterwards I proceeded to install Webmin only
to find out that NetBSD didn't install Perl at all.
That
left me hanging for a while until I could download
and install the latest version of perl which again
left me wondering how much of a pain it is to install
each app or
nessecary dependency on my own for netbsd. Finally
Perl 5.8.4 was installed without incident which
allowed me to install Webmin and Usermin. Since
Perl
wasn't installed I guessed correctly that MySQL
or apache weren't installed either. Once all of
the dependencies were installwed Webmin loaded just
fine on
my Windows XP system inside of IE and I was able
to install Host4Net just fine by changing the line
inside module.info from os_support=*-linux TO
os_support=*
Likes:
- Not much to like outside of NetBSD being stable.
- Host4Net did install so appearantly will work
on this OS once it's configured.
Dislikes:
- Lengthy OS install.
- No or little dependencies installed by default.
Everything else is installed manually.
- Requires tons of indepth knowedlge to use the
OS that most webhosting admins may not have.

Redhat Linux Enterprise AS 3.0 (i386)
Installing Redhat Enterprise was the same as every
other RH 9 install, it happened easy and without
incident. Host4Net was the same by simply installing
it as a
module inside of Webmin. My first job was to install
the latest MySQL binaries. For some reason it wasn't
installed during the default RH AS3 install, but
after
getting that setup and configuring a table everything
worked. The only complaint I have is that during
the setup host4net should look for mysql, create
a table and
a user rather than relying on the operator to manually
do that, which isn't a big deal at all.
Likes:
Everything installed, following the directions allowed
me to get it working the first try
Dislikes:
No complaints really. I wouldn't mind getting about
2-3 sample clients setup of real people who could
use it and probably discover more bugs than me in
normal
use.
